Stella Johnson

Overview

The work of photographer Stella Johnson spans editorial, corporate and documentary genres. As a Fulbright Scholar to Mexico in 2003-2004, Stella photographed on the project, "Intangible Heritage of Mexico," directed by Anthropologist Lourdes Arizpe. The National Autonomous University of Mexico will publish the work this year. In 2006, Stella was a Fulbright Senior Specialist to Mexico, teaching documentary photography and visual anthropology at the Regional Center for Multidisciplinary Research, CRIM-UNAM, Cuernavaca, Morelos. Stella teaches at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and Boston University and was a Visiting Scholar at the School of Visual Arts at Northeastern University in 2006.
Stella Johnson's personal work has been has been highlighted in dozens of shows in the US and Mexico. With a grant from The International Music and Art Foundation, her personal work will be showcased in the soon-to-be-published book, AL SOL, published by the University of Maine Press with exhibitions at the University of Maine Museum of Art and the Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography in 2008. In photographs taken over a 15-year period, Stella documented the lives of rural families living near the Mexican cities of Guanajuato, Oaxaca and Cuautla; the Garifuna and Miskito Cultures on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua and the Gbaya and Fulbe Cultures of Cameroon
Stella's has just published a very impressive collection of her work taken across Mexico, Cameroon and Nicaragua.
